Activity Fee

There are three types of mandatory activity fees. The Graduate Student Activity Fee is charged to most graduate and professional school students. The Undergraduate Student Activity Fee is charged to all undergraduate students. Engineering Government Dues are charged to all undergraduate students in the Pratt School of Engineering. These fees fund student government and other recognized Duke student organizations.

Dining

Dining charges are based on the student's choice of meal plan. The Dining plan fee is an administrative fee for Dining Services.

Engineering Government Dues

Charged to all undergraduate students in the Pratt School of Engineering to support the Engineering Student Government (ESG) activities.

First Time Registration Fee

On the first bill from Duke, undergraduate students (including transfer students) are required to pay a nonrefundable registration fee which includes a one-time transcript processing fee.

Health Fee

This mandatory fee is charged to all students and supports a variety of services and activities that foster a healthy campus community.

Insurance

Adequate medical insurance is required for all full-time and part-time degree-seeking students at Duke University. Eligible students who do not have adequate private medical insurance must enroll in the Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan (The Duke Plan).

Dental insurance is an optional policy offered for domestic, non-Ph.D. students and their dependents to enroll. These students must opt-in for this coverage. Ph.D. students are required to participate in the plan and will be automatically enrolled. International students will be automatically enrolled in the Duke dental plan unless they opt out of coverage by the established deadlines.

MailBox Rental

All students living on-campus are assessed this fee for renting a campus mailbox. Off-campus students have the option of renting a campus mailbox. This fee is assessed as long as the student is in possession of the box key.

Recreation Fee

This mandatory fee provides students with unlimited access to the on-campus recreation facilities as well as to services provided by Duke Recreation & Physical Education.

Residential Programming Fee

This fee is charged to undergraduates and funds House programs and events as well as training, advising, and oversight of House finances.

Student Service Fee

This mandatory fee is charged to undergraduate, graduate and professional students. It funds co-curricular services, leadership opportunities, arts programming, and other events through University Center Activities & Events.

Study Abroad Fee

Students studying through non-Duke study abroad programs are assessed this fee during the semester away from campus.

Traffic Tickets

Students issued traffic or parking tickets are given approximately 15 days to pay the fine directly to the Traffic Enforcement Office. Unpaid tickets are placed on the student’s Bursar account for billing. The date on the statement is the date the ticket posted to the Bursar’s Office account.

Transcript Fee

First year students in most programs are assessed this one-time fee, which gives current and former students access to an unlimited number of academic transcripts. First-year undergraduate students are also charged the one-time First Time Registration Fee.

Tuition and Program Fees

Tuition is charged based on the student’s registration and the requirements of the program of study. Many graduate and professional schools assess society fees, professional dues, lab fees and/or computer fees. Questions regarding these fees should be directed to the individual schools.
